Giles’ paintings are striking for the bold tertiary colours, precise linework and curving shapes. His practice combines geometrical and gestural abstraction in a way that offers the viewer a bright, lively, and playfully simple distraction to the uncertain times we live in.

The work displays traces of allusions to the culture that surrounded Giles as a child in the 80s — cartoons, comics, advertisements and sticker books. The colour palette and reoccurring shapes are influenced by those subliminal snippets of memory, giving rise to a peculiar feeling of familiarity in his work.

Talking about his work, Giles describes it as a form of escapism. Firstly, the element of imagining and planning out the pieces plays a big part in the process. Secondly, he invites the viewer to indulge in the visual pleasure, succumb to the joy of shape and colour, and be immersed in an overwhelmingly visual experience.

He has exhibited both nationally and internationally.
